Sustainability

The key to designing a successful laboratory is to design from the inside out. A good laboratory is functional and can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the science they deliver. To achieve this, we will incorporate the following into our design.

Reduction
Reuse/Reconstruction (flexibility and reversibility)
Re-natured
Reshaping

To achieve this, we will ensure we work closely with the users to develop a strong brief, which will include adjacencies amongst sub-groups.In addition, we ensure that the laboratory does not just focus on the scientific, office and break-out areas are equally important. This can lead to the cross-fertilisation of ideas which can increase scientific output. We will develop a hierarchy of collaborative spaces.
To enhance a collaborative approach, our laboratories are designed to ensure a high level of visual connection. This prevents a split between users and encourages a ‘one team’ approach.
The pace at which scientific research changes requires all new laboratories to be flexible. New equipment, emerging research streams and changing goals ensure laboratories need to be capable of adapting to change.
